These are the standards we hold ourselves to at Energy Supply Australia. They’re short on purpose. The point isn’t to sound grand; it’s to be clear about how we work so you can judge the reporting.
Independence
We’re editorially independent. No energy company, lobby group or political party has any say over what we publish. We don’t run advertorial as if it were journalism, and if a piece is ever sponsored we’ll label it plainly at the top. Reporting on a company is not an endorsement of it, and criticism isn’t a campaign against it.
Sourcing
We attribute. Where a number or a claim matters, we name where it came from — the market operator (AEMO), the regulator (the AER and the ABS), a company’s own annual report or ASX filing, a peak body, or published research. If we can’t stand a claim up, we don’t print it as fact. We prefer primary documents over other people’s summaries of them.
Accuracy and corrections
We get things wrong sometimes; everyone who publishes daily does. When we do, we fix it and note the correction rather than quietly editing the page. If you’ve spotted an error, tell us through the contact form and we’ll look at it promptly.
Analysis versus reporting
Some of what we publish is straight reporting; some is analysis and opinion by a named writer. We try to make it obvious which is which. An opinion piece will read like one and carry a clear byline. It won’t pretend the argument is settled when it isn’t.
Fairness to companies and people
Energy is a contested space and we write about real businesses and real decisions. We stick to the public record, we describe disputes and allegations as exactly that, and we give companies a fair go to respond where a story warrants it. We don’t call something a scandal because it makes a better headline.
Conflicts and funding
We’re a small independent publisher supported by advertising and affiliate arrangements, kept separate from the newsroom. Where a writer has a relevant interest in something they’re covering, we disclose it in the piece.
